The Veritas sharpening system combines a precision honing guide and angle jig for a fast, easy way to produce a very sharp edge on blades.

First grind the primary bevel with the guide in its normal position. Then hone a micro-bevel on a fine stone at a slightly different angle, set with a turn of the guide-setting knob. As the secondary bevel is small, you remove less steel and reach a sharp edge quickly and with little effort, without unclamping or resetting the blade.

The guide holds blades up to 2 3/8" wide and 5/8" thick and, with the Veritas angle jig, lets you set blade projection for any of the five most common bevel angles: 15°, 20°, 25°, 30° and 35°. Loosen the knurled brass bolt, turn the wheel to the selected angle, roll the guide with the blade loosely held up to the wheel and clamp the blade; you are ready to hone. For very short blades, such as those in many spokeshaves, see the Veritas small blade holder.

The wide roller and the positive positioning of the jig automatically square the blade as you set the angle. The bed has parallel lines for aligning narrow chisels or squaring up skewed blades. The roller is mounted on a spring-loaded cam shaft and can be set at three heights where it locks automatically. Most importantly, you can return to exactly the same angle every time, improving accuracy and reducing sharpening time.

There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.

A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.

A honing guide holds the tool at the right angle to the stone. A side-clamping honing guide grips the tool from the sides and suits chisels and narrow plane irons well. A top-clamping honing guide holds from the top and also handles blades with bevelled sides and unusual shapes.

Both work well, and the choice depends on the tools you have. The guide compares the types.
