The Veritas large router plane is an invaluable tool for work on stopped or through dadoes and grooves, or for any work that requires an area cut to a precise depth. The blade depth is regulated by a fine screw feed that travels 1/32" per turn for precise adjustment, with the resulting depth of cut controlled by a locking depth stop. Unique to the large router plane is a spring-loaded blade-clamping collar that holds the blade in position when the collar is loosened. It provides tactile feedback, allowing controlled blade adjustment to a depth of 1". The collar can also be set to fully release for quick and easy blade removal, for repositioning in front of the post for general work, behind the post for bullnose applications, or laterally (left or right) for work on hinge gains.

Made to the same high standards as other Veritas planes, the ductile cast-iron body is accurately machined and ground flat. Weight is 2 lb. The large wooden knobs are positioned to provide both comfort and excellent control. If you would like to customize a pair of handles, a hardware kit that includes two turned brass connectors, two hanger bolts, a hex bolt, and a mandrel for lathe mounting is available separately.

The plane includes two high-carbon steel cutters: a two-piece 1/2" straight blade, and a two-piece 1/2" spear-point blade (for final smoothing). A blade sharpening jig is also included. The optional fence (available separately) made of stainless steel and aluminum can be positioned on either side of the plane and will work on both straight and curved pieces. As well as for dadoes and grooves, the router plane is the perfect tool for inlay or intarsia work, or for cleaning out recesses for hardware, where fine control is critical.

Made in Canada (except for blades). Patented.

Yes, much of what you do with a router can be done with hand planes, quietly and without dust:

Router plane – flat bottoms in recesses, housings and inlays
Plough plane – grooves along the grain
Shoulder plane and rebate plane – rebates and tenons

Hand tools come in fewer sizes than router bits, so you have to adapt the dimensions to the blades available. In return you get full control and can work anywhere.

Our separate router plane blades fit the Veritas medium and large router planes. In the two smallest Veritas models, the small router plane and the miniature router plane, only the blades supplied with the plane fit.

If you want to be able to switch between blades, choose the medium or the large model. The medium model is not much bigger than the small one, while the miniature plane is much smaller. Unless you need a miniature plane to save space, the medium model gives you more options.

If you have an older router plane from another maker, compare the dimensions: the shank of our router plane blades is square and at most 12 × 12 mm. Compare that with the hole in the clamp of your plane.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

Low-angle jack planes such as the Lie-Nielsen No. 62 and the Veritas low-angle jack are also popular all-round planes. A block plane is a good addition for end grain and chamfers. The guide explains how the hand plane is built and which types exist.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.

Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
